KITESURFING AND OTHER SPORTS
THE SEA AWAITS YOU
On the beaches of Estoril and Carlota, you’ll find several centres that offer courses, rental and equipment storage for windsurfing, kitesurfing, hydrofoil and SUP surfing, with the opportunity to take a masterclass with the champions! Ask for info.
In addition, kayaks and canoes can be hired to reach the picturesque islet of Sal Rei independently. You can also reach the islet with guided kayak trips, to enjoy snorkelling and a visit to the Bragança fort, with an expert on hand to tell its story.
And on your return, you can enjoy a tasty barbecue on the beach.

Snorkelling and diving - The wildest sea on the planet, as Jacques Cousteau called it. It’s a marvellous experience to swim among colourful fish such as parrotfish, watching moray eels, lobsters and puffer fish, and preparing for unexpected encounters with green, hawksbill and loggerhead sea turtles. For those who want to try freediving or scuba diving, some specialised centres offer these experiences, for the chance to discover tropical and Mediterranean fauna and flora, and if you’re particularly fortunate, the chance to spot some large fish species, including the whale shark.
WATER SPORTS FOR CHAMPIONS AND DREAMERS
On Boa Vista, kitesurfing champions twirl around amid the waves. Some world championship kitesurfers train here. The island is an international stage for water sports.
In addition to kitesurfing, currently all the rage, with many qualified centres, experienced instructors and masterclasses (including those held by the Cape Verdean world champion and four-time runner-up or third-place finisher, Matchu Lopes), hydrofoil surfing is also gaining in popularity. It looks easy when you see them braving the waves on a board with a rudder and a strange sail steered with their hands! And then there’s wave surfing - we’re talking about the ocean after all - with some truly thrilling tube riding, as well as SUP surfing and more classic windsurfing.
