"BUBISTA" LIFE
Despite being one of the Cape Verde islands that has remained somewhat on the fringe for a long time, Boa Vista's traditions and local culture are particularly interesting and engaging. Experience the authentic everyday life of the island's inhabitants, known as bubistas, and discover many aspects of life in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
A day in the life of a cabrer or with the donkeys
A recent activity designed to keep traditions alive and bring work to the villages, the Cabrer Journey consists of a visit to a goat farm, offering the chance to experience a day in the life of a cabrer, or goat farmer, complete with straw hat, trying your hand at milking, learning how cheese is made, and then tasting it and enjoying a pequeno almoço like the local countryfolk. This great experience can be had in
Cabeça dos Tarafes.
Another option is a visit to the donkey farm, Nha Orta. There are many native donkeys living in the wild, so they have been given a home here, opening the farm to visitors and giving them the chance to engage with the cute donkeys.
All the excursions are organised with our selected partners
Capoeira
The Abadá-Capoeira school in Boa Vista has been training children and young people in this ancient Afro-Brazilian discipline for many years.
It’s amazing to watch, and you can even try your hand at a few lessons to pick up the basic moves. A little agility is required, but the skilled local instructors will enable you to grasp the secrets of this art.
Viva Cachupa!
Attend a local cookery school and learn how to prepare the classic cachupa, the national dish of Cape Verde. Guided by an expert cook, you’ll discover the ingredients and techniques required to prepare this delicious soup with maize, beans and meat or fish. An inspiring idea to take home a little Cape Verdean culinary culture. Cooking classes are also available to learn to cook other typical dishes, such as pastel, rissois, croquete or coco e leite pudding.
Pottery and Crafts
Enjoy picking up some manual skills and creating something beautiful and useful with the craftsmen of the Boa Vista pottery school, or learn the art of transforming what the ocean washes up into accessories and jewellery made from natural or recycled materials, contributing to sustainability and the preservation of local traditions.
